While this does not improve the graphics tremendously, it makes characters move much more realistically and look more organic, and it does give the whole game a unique look. Yet, unlike Alone in the Dark, in Ecstatica everything is rendered with ellipsoids. The engine is somewhat similar to Alone in the Dark's: static cinematic cameras that switch as you walk by, showing beautiful 2D backgrounds with 3D objects rendered on top.

Better be careful, because there's something lurking around every corner! The story is set in the 10th century as you come across a mysterious village and decide to investigate. This 3D horror/action/adventure game was heavily influenced by the Alone in the Dark series, and it shows. It's time for you to meet Ecstatica, perhaps the most original game of its time.
